Lipo foam 101: what it is and how to use it

If you're getting ready for liposuction, your surgeon may have added "lipo foam" to your shopping list. It's a small item, but it often comes up when patients talk about early recovery comfort. If you're not sure what it is or how to use it, you're not alone.

This guide explains what lipo foam is, why many surgeons recommend it under compression garments, and how to put it on.

Always follow your surgeon's instructions on whether to use lipo foam, where to place it, and for how long.

What is lipo foam?

Lipo foam is a soft, cushioned foam that goes between your skin and your compression garment after liposuction. It comes in pre-cut sheets or in a roll you cut to size.

Think of it as a soft layer between you and your garment. Your garment provides the compression. The foam sits underneath to help that compression feel smoother and more even across the treated areas.

Why do surgeons recommend lipo foam?

Every surgeon has their own approach, but here are the most common reasons patients hear:

  • More even pressure. Seams, edges, and closures on a garment can press harder in some spots than others. Foam helps spread the pressure across a wider area.
  • Fewer creases and marks. In early recovery, the skin over treated areas can be tender. Foam can reduce the creases and lines a garment sometimes leaves behind.
  • Extra comfort. Many patients simply find that a cushioned layer makes wearing compression day and night more comfortable.

Lipo foam doesn't replace your compression garment. It works together with it.

Our lipo foam options

We carry three lipo foam options, so you can order your foam alongside your garment.

Lipo Foam 1 Sheet Pack (LPF01)

The Lipo Foam 1 Sheet Pack (LPF01) is a single 8" x 11" sheet, 1 inch thick. It's an easy way to try lipo foam, cover one small area, or keep a spare on hand.

Lipo Foam Sheets 5 Pack (LPF05)

The Lipo Foam Sheets 5 Pack (LPF05) includes five pre-cut sheets. Each sheet is 8" x 11" and 1 inch thick. Sheets are a good fit for smaller or specific areas, like the flanks (the sides of your waist), the inner thighs, or the arms. They're ready to use with little or no trimming.

Lipo Foam 10ft Roll (LPF10)

The Lipo Foam 10ft Roll (LPF10) is 11 inches wide and 10 feet long, so you can cut exactly the length you need. A roll is helpful when you're covering larger areas, like the full abdomen and back, or when your surgeon wants the foam shaped to your body.

How to use lipo foam

Your surgeon's instructions come first. In general, here's how it works:

  1. Start with clean, dry skin. Gently pat the area dry before you place the foam.
  2. Cut to fit. Trim the sheet or roll to cover the treated area. Rounding the corners can help keep edges from digging in.
  3. Ask about incisions and drains. Check with your surgeon whether foam should cover incision sites or sit around any drains.
  4. Place the foam, then the garment. Lay the foam flat on the treated area. Carefully put your compression garment on over it.
  5. Smooth out folds. Run your hand over the garment to make sure the foam isn't bunched or folded. Folds can create pressure points.
  6. Replace as directed. Your surgeon will tell you when and how often to change the foam. Replace it sooner if it gets soiled or loses its shape.

Pairing lipo foam with your garment

Lipo foam works best with a garment that fits well. If the garment is too loose, the foam can slip. If it's too tight, it can feel uncomfortable. Use our size chart, and measure yourself before you order.

Our garments are latex free, have no lace, and use fabric with an antimicrobial treatment. That's helpful to know when a garment sits over a layer of foam for long stretches. FAQ

What is lipo foam used for?

Lipo foam is placed between your skin and your compression garment after liposuction. Many surgeons recommend it to help spread compression more evenly, reduce creases from the garment, and make wearing compression more comfortable.

How long do I need to wear lipo foam?

It depends on your surgeon and your recovery. Some surgeons recommend foam mainly in the first weeks after surgery. Follow your surgeon's timeline.

Should I get sheets or a roll?

Sheets are pre-cut at 8" x 11" and come as a single sheet (LPF01) or a 5 pack (LPF05), which works well for smaller areas. The roll (LPF10) is 11 inches wide and 10 feet long, which is easier for larger areas like the abdomen and back. Some patients use both.

Can I cut lipo foam?

Yes. Both the sheets and the roll can be trimmed to fit the area your surgeon wants covered.

Is lipo foam the same as an ab board?

No. Lipo foam is soft and flexible, and it follows the shape of your body. An ab board is a firmer panel that some surgeons recommend for a flatter surface over the abdomen. Ask your surgeon which one, or both, is right for you.
